It depends on who you ask. Some believe that a a true moped must have functional pedals. The term "mo-ped" certainly would imply that the vehicle would have pedals. In some states moped plates are only granted to vehicles with functional pedals. The term scooter is usually associated with a two-wheeled vehicle that has a step through design. Give us a call if you are still confused. Or go to the next question.
That depends. Most of the scooters in our shop do NOT require a motorcycle license. To summarize the Wisconsin definition, the vehicle must meet the following criteria.
Respective to the vehicles in our shop, if it is under 50cc displacement NO special license is required in Wisconsin. If it is over 50cc then YES you will need a motorcycle license. I am not a lawyer and this information is in no way meant to be represented as legal fact. If you are interested in the legal definition for mopeds in Wisconsin click here.
Again, that depends. 50cc displacement scooters will typically get 70 to 120 miles per gallon. Small engines can be greatly effected by the following
The bottom line is that you will get better fuel economy than almost any vehicle on the road. A couple of summers agoI clocked 106 miles per gallon on a Tomos Streetmate. Needless to say I was pretty happy with that!!
YES! Most of them are complete junk. Do your research and buy from a reputable dealer that will provide support if you have a question and will provide service if you have a problem. If it seems to good to be true, it probably is. We have had numerous "heartbreakers" come into the shop that have broken down after a couple of weeks. I feel bad for the customer who just wasted $800 - $900 dollars on a bike that dies on them. We will NOT service these bikes as parts are not readily available. Additionally, some of them are downright UNSAFE!! Things to consider when buying.
Are parts readily available?
What is the warranty?
Does the dealer support what it sells?
Will the dealer continue to provide support years down the road?
What is the dealer network in your area? (are there other dealers who carry the brand in question)
Yes, the state of Wisconsin requires a valid drivers license to operate a scooter or moped on public roadways. Some states don't have this requirement, check with your local officials.
Yes, We service all of the makes that we sell as well as many other major brands. This is mostly dependant on availability of parts. Older Japanese bikes (Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki) and almost ANY bike purchased off of eBay may pose a parts availability problem. Give us a call if you have any questions.
Yes, we have on site financing available though a number of different institutions.
